Desmin had fallen asleep at her desk and when she awoke to
her mother stroking her hear. “My child, come with me!” was the sweet voice
that comforted her. She stood up and hugged her mother. Desmin embraced her
mother. “Mother,” she whispered, “Oh, mother! How I have missed you! Why did
you leave me? Tabitha is nice enough, but she is not you!” “Hush now child!
Come with me!”
She followed her mom trancelike.
“Mom, where are we going?”
she pleaded. “Child we are going home!”
A wide smile spread across Desmin’s face. She
grasped her mother hand and followed her out of the room, down the stairs, and
opening the door to the front. The cold ground shocked Desmin and her bare
feet. She felt the cool morning dew wet her feet. Desmin barely noticed. She
was too happy in the company of her mother to be half aware of any cold or
discomfort she might otherwise feel. It was like a dream to see her mother
again, breathing, warm and alive. They seemed to float down the hill together.
The dawn was breaking across the bottom of the sky.
It was a long walk, but Desmin was too happy that any length
of was of no consequence. She looked up and saw the most beautiful woman she
had ever seen. Her mother seemed even more beautiful than ever. She seemed like
an angel. The glow was about her. Olivia’s face was calm and tranquil. The cold
part of Desmin’s heart had all but melted in the presence of other half of her
soul. Reunited, she was continually looking up with her arms swinging by her
side instead of down with her hand clasped together. Desmin was a whole
different child. If Tabitha had seen her in that moment, she would not have
believed it.
They continued together for what seemed like such a short
time together until they had reached her old home. After roughing through the
grass and overturned and lifting up a stone, they key was produced. They walked
up a few front steps to the door and they opened the door together.
